Five Currant Buns in a Baker’s Shop is a favourite counting song that is easy to sing and so much for kids to join n with. Kids will love taking it in turns to pay their money and take their currant bun away!
This is a great activity for circle time, working on number skills, turn taking, and of course language skills as everyone sings along.
You could also use these cute bun puppets with any other bun song or story, or as part of a bakers shop dramatic play set up!

Five Currant Buns Song Lyrics.
Everyone seems to sing this song with slightly different words, but here are the words we sing.
Five Currant Buns
Five currant buns in a baker’s shop,
Round and fat with a cherry on the top!
Along came a girl with some money one day,
Bought a currant bun and took it away.
Four currant buns in a baker’s shop…
Three currant buns in a baker’s shop…
Two currant buns in a baker’s shop…
One currant bun in a baker’s shop…
Here’s a quick video of my kids and I singing the song in case you don’t know it.
You can switch the words in the song around from girl to boy or use the child’s name so they know it is their turn to choose a bun. You can also easily change up the type of money you spend, maybe you spend a dollar, or perhaps a euro!
But one of the best parts of the song is when you get to the end you can must pretend to mix up and cook another batch of current buns so you can sing it all over again!

Once you are done singing you can also use these currant buns to set up your own baker’s shop pretend play!
How to Make the Five Current Buns Puppets.
This set of printable puppets includes five current bun puppets, and some money. To make the puppets simply download the pdf file below, and print it and cut out the buns and coins.
You can use regular printer paper, or card stock to print onto, we often use matte photo paper for really vibrant colours. We use a basic deskjet printer for all our printables

We taped our puppets onto clothes pegs this time so we could easily get them on and off our ‘shop display’ (aka a cardboard box). You could also attach them to craft sticks, or whatever you have handy.
This printable is an A4 sized pdf file, you will need a pdf reader such as adobe acrobat to open it. It will fit to print on US ‘letter sized’ paper, just be sure to select ‘fit’ or ‘shrink to fit’ from your printer options to allow for printer margins.

So I know what I’ll be doing when Annie comes home from school later, teaching her this song!
I love how you included a £ sign too, Annie likes to think she’s Australian but sadly enough we live in England ;-)Reply
I was trying to think of other currency signs to include, but drew a total blank, so dollars, cents and pounds it is! LOL

There’s always the euro currency sign.

Very cute set! And certainly a cute baker in that outfit!
I’ve heard this a few times via ABC iView so will have to get Daddy to print these off for Miss Daisy!Reply
These are so fantastic. You know, I have just realised that my girls don’t have a cash register. They play shops all the time but they are not so great at the whole trading thing. Most things are given away freely haha! Must get them a register! Can’t wait to try it out with these gorgeous currant buns!

I love your song current buns. I had never heard it sung this way. We sing it with donuts. Five children stand up and they are the donuts. They can wear a donut ring made out of poster board around their neck with different colors of donuts drawn on it. Another child is the buyer. The song goes like this
Five Little Donuts in the donut shop
Five little donuts in the donut shop,
sprinkle them with sugar and pat them on the top
Along comes a boy/girl with a dime to pay,
He buys one donut and he walks away. ( he has a pretend coin that he gives the seller and chooses a donut Child to go sit with. Then another child gets to do the same until the donuts are gone. The last child buyer. There are no little donuts in the donut shop….the boy comes and he looks and he looks and he walks away. Very similar to your buns song.. I would love to get donut props that could be held if you every have the time or desire to make them. Debra.Reply
Thank you so much for all the great song props. I have been looking and looking for some that I can use with my circle time.. thank you so very much. Debra
